Eyelid Plastic Surgery: Opening up the “window to the soul”

The eyes are sometimes described as the "window to the soul" and tell a lot about our moods, energy levels, and beauty. Unfortunately, sagging of the upper and lower eyelids is one of the earliest signs of aging and can add years to your age and make you look tired and stressed. The good news is that this problem is highly correctable through plastic surgery. Droopy eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, is done on an outpatient basis frequently under either twilight or general anesthesia. The cosmetic eye surgery is relatively painless and the results are visible as early as one week later. The incisions are very well concealed and usually not visible after healing has occurred. Eyelid plastic surgery truly is a means of rejuvenating the face without the prolonged recovery time with many other types of facial plastic surgery. If you feel older than your actually age due to eyelid wrinkles, surgery may be the only way to make a significant difference in your appearance. Eyelid surgery (technically called blepharoplasty) is a procedure to remove fat—usually along with excess skin and muscle from the upper and lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below your eyes-- features that make you look older and more tired than you feel, and may even interfere with your vision. While it can add an upper eyelid crease to Asian eyes in what’s called double eyelid surgery, it will not erase evidence of your ethnic or racial heritage. Double eyelid surgery is a specific type of blepharoplasty in which puffy upper lids having either an absent or minimal eyelid crease (that found in many Asian patients) can be modified to make them more refined with a crease and more definition. Bilateral blepharoplasty can be done alone, or in conjunction with other plastic surgery procedures such as a facelift, browlift, or rhinoplasty. Cosmetic eye surgery is typically done for brightening the eyes and removing the hanging skin over the eyes or the bags beneath the eyes. Occasionally, droopy eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) will be covered by health insurance if it is causing significant visual field obstruction. Reconstructive eyelid surgery is also typically a covered eye plastic surgery procedure and may be required in cases of cancer, trauma, and burns. Reconstructive eyelid surgery is a form of plastic surgery that can involve skin grafts and tissue rearrangement depending on the nature of the problem. When discussing eyelid plastic surgery we are referring to both reconstructive eyelid surgery and cosmetic eye surgery, the latter usually referring to bilateral blepharoplasty. Plastic surgery of all kinds, including bilateral blepharoplasty is performed regularly at Aria Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery in Northwest Indiana.
